On Thursday, the Maui SWCDs hosted a Conference Tour to highlight the unique assets of Maui agriculture. MYCO Maui LLC, Maui's only fresh mushroom farm, is nestled in Upcountry Makawao. With their innovative growing, harvesting and recycling techniques, the Chennelle's have truly carved out a niche for themselves. Haleakala Ranch in Upcountry Maui is an active cattle operation with over 4,000 head, along with herd dogs and goats. Owners of the ranch have integrated the ranch's activities, natural environment and history into a master plan for eco-tourism. The Pellegrino family of Noho‘ana Farm in Waikapū gave the group a glimpse of their family's 400 year history at the taro farm. Thanks to their hard work, Noho‘ana Farm has become a cultural-educational bilingual center were students of all ages come to witness sustainability Hawaiian style.
