West Maui Soil & Water Conservation District

The West Maui SWCD has been assisting agricultural producers since 1954. Over the years, our District's efforts have not only conserved soil and water conservation for our producers, but have helped keep our coastal waters clean. West Maui SWCD continues to lead our community in conservation and environmental reviews.

Conservation Planning

Map of West Maui SWCD

West Maui SWCD works with our Cooperators to develop conservation plans in an effort to minimize negative impacts of agriculture on natural resources. We are a non-regulatory group, and our Cooperators work with us voluntarily. And though many of our Cooperators are individual land users and small businesses, we also work with large agriculture enterprises and various agencies to draft conservation plans for their projects.

Our conservation plans bring together the Cooperator's business plans with the unique needs of the land to capitalize production and protect resources. Anyone interested in applying for Cooperator status should contact our office.

Permitting & Exemptions

Some conservation plans include practices that require permitting through other federal, state or county agencies. Cooperators with District approved conservation plans may also apply for permit exemptions to Maui County Grading, Grubbing and Stockpiling Ordinances. Depending your practices, you may need to apply for other permits. District Cooperators are required to acquire all necessary permits before starting work. Click here for permitting information.

Special Projects

Lahaina Flood Control Project

Lahaina Flood Control Project
SWCD Director Wes Nohara met with a contractor to inspect the Lahaina flood control channel for repairs.

The Lahaina Flood Control Project is one of the many activities West Maui SWCD has initiated over the years. Main components of the project have been on hold recently because of disagreements between the District and some landowners over the projects' design, as well as multiple changes in land ownership. But despite these setbacks, the Lahaina Flood Control project remains a high priority for the West Maui SWCD and will be completed as soon as possible.

In the meantime, West Maui SWCD has implemented a temporary flood control channel. The channel was designed to protect Lahaina town from flooding until setbacks are resolved and a higher capacity flood diversion system is installed. West Maui SWCD continues to maintain and monitor the flood control channel to protect Lahaina from flood events.

West Maui Watershed Restoration Action Strategy

The West Maui SWCD is currently drafting a Watershed Restoration Action Strategy. We have already received comments and reviews from the State Department of Health regarding a Scope of Work plan for the West Maui WRAS. The Scope of Work is being revised at the moment. Contact our office for details.
