Hāna Soil & Water Conservation District

The Hāna SWCD was established in 1953, the second SWCD established in Maui County. We continue to provide technical assistance to our community and offer advice on sound conservation measures. We believe that a better awareness and respect for the cultural values in our district and our state are an absolute necessity for a sustainable future for our community. Hāna SWCD wants to be a part of the solution.

Meeting Information

Agriculture producers interested in becoming a Cooperator should attend a SWCD meeting. Hāna SWCD generally meets on the3rd Wednesday of each month at 5:30 pm at the Hāna Ranch Headquarters. Call our office at (808) 244-3100 to confirm the meeting. Please fill out all application materials prior to the meeting.

Conservation Planning

Hāna SWCD works with our Cooperators to develop conservation plans and minimize negative impacts of agriculture on natural resources. We are non-regulatory, and our both our Directors and Cooperators are volunteers. The conservation plans we draft bring together the Cooperator's business plans with the unique needs of the land to protect resources and continue production. Permitting & Exemptions

Some conservation plans include practices that require permitting through other federal, state or county agencies. Cooperators with District approved conservation plans may also apply for permit exemptions to Maui County Grading, Grubbing and Stockpiling Ordinances. Depending your practices, you may need to apply for other permits. District Cooperators are required to acquire all necessary permits before starting work. Click here for permitting information.

Public Outreach Activities

Hāna SWCD frequently participates in a number of community outreach projects. Knowing that soil and water issues are only part of the problem, our district is focused on better ways to distribute information and become more pro-active in our approach to education.
